The experiment quickly grew out of hand, ending only six days after it began, instead of the fourteen it was supposed to have lasted. Conducted in 1971 by a team of researchers, were 24 undergraduates were selected to play the roles of both guards and prisoners and live in a mock prison in the basement of the Stanford psychology building. The goal of this experiment was to study the psychological effects of becoming a prisoner or prison guard and to illustrate the power of authority. Opinion: The film is a remake of the German thriller Das Experiment, that was inspired by the real-life Stanford prison experiment conducted in 1971. But soon quarrels arise and the wardens use more drastic sanctions to confirm their authority. In the beginning the mood between both groups is insecure and rather emphatic. Everybody is free to quit at any time, thereby forfeiting payment. The ‘prisoners’ are locked up and have to follow seemingly mild rules, and the ‘guards’ are told simply to keep order without using physical violence. Plot: For two weeks 26 male participants are hired to play prisoners and guards.
